Radius will be presenting a paper on our 2012 series RANGE at the Trans X Transmission Art Symposium for the 12th annual Deep Wireless Festival. The festival is hosted by New Adventures in Sound Art.

RANGE: Local, Distant, Fringe explores the importance of place and proximity in the event of radio transmission and reception. The talk will present audio excerpts of the three episodes featured in the RANGE series and Radius’ curatorial vision for executing location-based broadcasts.

The Radius RANGE presentation is on Saturday, May 18 at 11:45am EST at the Artscape Wychwood Barns in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Statement:

Scan, the default tool, which is available on most vehicle radios, is used in Scanning not as a temporary method of searching, but as an experience in itself. If this mode is no longer used as only a practical means for biased programming, but is acknowledged as an end in itself, then a rhythmic modular inventory is generated that presents living chunks of broadcasted zeitgeist.

Scanning consists of continuous replays of Chicago FM station scans from the very immediate past.

Episode 39 will host Jesse Eric Schmidt. Jesse Eric Schmidt is a process-oriented conceptualist who uses actions and objects to interrogate and reconfigure methodologies surrounding art. He has formal education in architecture, psychology and kinesiology, and received his MFA in New Genres on a merit-based fellowship at the San Francisco Art Institute. He makes art in and about everyday situations in order to deconstruct, provoke, and rearrange ideas about our behavioral lures and their implicative consequences. He uses art practice to keep curiosity rigorous through designing projects that advance questions.

Statement:

Babbleon Cork, the result of Gavin Prior’s residency at the Guesthouse in May 2010, is an audio collage in three parts composed solely of sounds recorded during his time in Cork, Ireland. With his portable recorder, he moved through the city guided by suggestions from Corkonians, his own ears, and serendipity. He had certain recording locations in mind, but many of the sounds were stumbled upon, which lured him away from his intended destination.

In Cork, his task was to listen keenly and to seek out interesting places and people to record as source material. Working within a strict set of limitations, he used only the material he found in the city to produce the collage, making conventionally ‘musical’ passages solely from found sound. He avoided effects (apart from some EQ scrubbing up) because he wanted to keep it visceral and life-like. He felt driven to create a contemporary, urban soundtrack.

Episode 38 will host Gavin Prior. Gavin Prior is best known as a member of United Bible Studies. He currently plays in the noise duo Toymonger and Free Jazz/Metal trio Tarracóir and is working on the debut album of his newest band Sabre Series. Since graduating from University of London with an MA in Music Technology, he has been based in Dublin and has improvised with musicians from Ireland and around the world including David Lacey, Seán Meehan, Thollem McDonas, Rhodri Davies, Okkyung Lee and Damo Suzuki.

He plays straight acoustic guitar and electric guitar with preparations and extended technique. He circuit bends and modifies cheap instruments which can be heard in his recordings with Toymonger and various improvisational meetings. He has performed throughout Europe, America and Asia and co-founded the Deserted Village label.
